This is a collection of articles by Dvoretsky, Yusupov and other contributors on various aspects of openings and openings work. The material is based on lectures given at the Dvoretsky-Yusupov school for gifted players. The school aims:

• To present the student with general methods of 'conducting the chess struggle'
• To impart a rational method of studying chess
• To analyze defects in their students' play

The book is aimed at players who want to learn how to work on their own. There are 15 articles in the book, the main authors being Dvoretsky(5) and Yusupov(4). Other authors (Dolmatov,Razuvaev,Kosikov,Vulfson and Zlotnik) contribute the rest of the material.

A wide variety of topics are covered with complete games and annotated fragments being the main format. I give a detailed listing and description of the contents so readers can judge for themselves the range, depth, format and suitability of the material
